The Andrew Jackson Higgins National Memorial, in West Pawnee Park beside US 81 in Columbus, honors Andrew Jackson Higgins, born in Columbus on August 28, 1886, whose landing craft carried Allied troops ashore on D-Day. Dedicated in 2001 after a Columbus High School class project, it has a full-size steel Higgins boat with bronze soldiers by Fred Hoppe, brass stars holding sand from the D-Day beaches and a statue of Higgins. Beside it is the Freedom Memorial, a bronze eagle on a steel beam with World Trade Center steel.
