About Savannah

Savannah, the first seat of Butler County, stood near the Platte River on the county’s northern edge, near the Shinn’s Ferry crossing north of present-day Bellwood. No traces survive.

History

Savannah grew up at David R. Gardner’s ranch, started in 1859 on the Fort Kearney road. It was named on January 4, 1870, for an eastern town of that name, and served as county seat from 1869 to 1873, with a courthouse, a hotel, two stores and a blacksmith shop. After four elections David City won the seat by 39 votes, and the records were moved on August 6, 1873. The post office ran from January 17, 1870, to March 21, 1882. A History Nebraska marker for Shinn’s Ferry stands at 1290–1292 Road 41 near Bellwood.
