About Kirk
Kirk was a rural post office in southeastern Banner County, about 14 miles east of Harrisburg. Kirk Chapel, at County Roads 14 and 61, and Kirk Cemetery keep the name.
History
The post office, named for its first postmaster, opened in 1890 and closed in 1929; a mail route ran from Kirk to Harrisburg from 1914 to 1922. The cemetery was deeded in 1902 to a Swedish Mission church and is still in use. A county history tells of two men from Kirk who cut and split a hundred cedar posts and were paid seven cents apiece.
