About Freeport
Freeport was a settlement on Pumpkin Creek in eastern Banner County, about 18 miles from Harrisburg by the old stage road. Its exact site is not known, and nothing of the town remains.
History
E. M. Cowen, its founder and first postmaster, named Freeport for Freeport, Illinois, near his old home; the post office was open by August 1887. In 1890 Freeport had about 75 people, more than Ashford, and it was one of the four towns that competed for the county seat, backed by the Freeport Gazette. The first marriage recorded in the new county took place here on April 5, 1889. After Harrisburg won, Cowen edited the Early Day there. A few Czech families farmed in the valley near Freeport, about 40 miles from the railroad at Kimball. The post office closed in 1911.
