Duff is a small unincorporated community in Rock County, Nebraska, set in the rolling Sandhills a few miles west-northwest of its neighbor, Rose. Like many namesake communities in this part of Nebraska, Duff is believed to take its name from an early settler.
The community's post office had a much longer run than most of its Rock County neighbors, operating for 61 years from 1892 to 1953 -- evidence that Duff served as a real local hub for area ranch families through the first half of the 20th century, even though little of that activity remains visible today.
History
Duff's post office was established in 1892 and remained in operation until 1953, a 61-year run that made it one of the longer-lived rural post offices in Rock County. The community's name is believed to honor an early settler named Duff, following a common naming pattern for small Sandhills communities platted around a post office or rail siding.
