Star, Nebraska is a vanished pioneer settlement in northeastern Holt County, set among ranch and farm country between Dorsey and Opportunity along the old trail that once ran from Neligh to the Niobrara River. Founded around a post office named by young mail carrier Charles Downey in the early 1880s, Star once supported a store, a drugstore, a lumberyard, and a blacksmith shop before fading away by the early twentieth century, leaving Sunny Slope Farm and the Ash Grove community hall as its lasting legacy.

Historical Background

Star's story begins with the Downey family, who by most accounts were the first white settlers in this corner of Holt County, arriving in 1880 to build a sod house so large it doubled as a wayside hotel for freighters traveling the trail between Neligh and the Niobrara. It was young Charles Downey who gave the coming post office its name and carried its earliest mail on horseback, riding a route that wound in from Orchard down through the whimsically named crossroads of Mars and Venus before reaching Star itself. In its brief heyday the little town supported a store, a drugstore, a lumberyard, and a blacksmith shop, with the post office tucked into a settler's sod house.

Much of Star's fortune rode on one family's store. Elvin Cole, who had married local girl Etta Ridgeway, took over the town's general store and, in the generous but ultimately ruinous custom of the era, let his neighbors run up credit during the lean 1890s. When the debts caught up with him, Cole went broke along with much of the surrounding countryside, and the town he'd helped anchor "disappeared like mist in the sunshine," leaving only the old halfway-house hotel behind.

The Coles didn't stay away for good. Elvin and Etta returned to Holt County in 1902, rebuilt their lives on what became known as Sunny Slope Farm, and in 1910 the Star post office moved right onto their property, with Elvin as postmaster — an office three generations of his family would tend until it finally closed in 1957. Around the same time, the Thierolf family, having bought out the old Downey homestead, kept the community's ranching life going, with young Rosa Thierolf serving as postmistress for nine years.

Star never rebuilt itself into a proper town again, but the neighborhood it left behind didn't fade quietly. In 1955, residents pooled their labor and a system of paid "memberships" to raise Ash Grove hall on the site of the old schoolhouse, a gathering place for dances, reunions, and 4-H meetings that carried the Star community's social life forward long after the last store and post office were gone.
