Description

The Joseph and Katherine Severa Skala House was built near Battle Creek by 1869 and is a rare product of Czech-American culture. Its remains were discovered inside a house being demolished in 1968 and moved to Battle Creek, where the timber rooms are preserved as found.

It is built with an old Slavic carpentry method: thin planks set within a post-and-beam frame, known as post-and-panel construction, and the only example in Nebraska. The two-room layout follows an old Czech peasant cottage plan, with tie beams and diagonal willow lath covered in mud and straw plaster. The roof and porch were rebuilt in the traditional Czech way with old lumber donated by Mary Lucht, a descendant of the first pioneers. A Nebraska State Historical Society marker stands beside it, next to the Heritage Museum.

It is part of Battle Creek Heritage Park.
