About Walton

Walton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (351 people in 2020) just east of the Lincoln city limits in Lancaster County, at about 1,217 feet. US 34 forms its northern edge, and Stevens Creek forms its eastern boundary on its way north to Salt Creek. Walton has its own post office (ZIP 68461), and it is the headquarters of the Cornhusker Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The crushed-stone MoPac Trail East passes through on its 21.6-mile route from Lincoln to Wabash.

History

Walton grew up as a station on the Missouri Pacific Railway, which the 1890 gazetteer placed nine miles east of Lincoln. It was named for A. Walton, a pioneer settler, and its post office, established in 1880, is the only one it has had. The railroad grade is now the MoPac Trail East. The Herter Farmstead, 4949 S. 148th St., is on the National Register of Historic Places. Walton has grown steadily, from 174 people in 1990 to 351 in 2020.
