History
Yankee Hill was an early settlement near where the Nebraska City–Fort Kearny trail crossed Salt Creek. When the commissioners toured for a site for the new state capital in 1867, “the ladies of Yankee Hill” served them a chicken dinner with ice cream, but the capital went to Lincoln. Yankee Hill Brick, founded in 1881, made the bricks for the inner structure of the State Capitol in the 1920s, shipping them by its own rail siding; in 2018 it made about 30 million bricks a year and was one of two brick makers left in Nebraska. Yankee Hill Cemetery, first called Pleasant Hill, has evidence of burials from the late 1840s; its association took the Yankee Hill name in 1926. The census counted 476 people in 1990 and 286 in 2020.
