History

Emerald was a station on the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, and its name is said to come from the land being “as green as an emerald.” Its post office ran from 1884 to 1943. The 1890 state gazetteer gave Emerald about 50 people, a station agent, a general store whose owner, G. W. Lee, was also postmaster, and a blacksmith. History Nebraska holds records of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Emerald from 1878 to 1952. Merle’s Food & Drink, which drew people to Emerald for about 60 years, has closed. The census counted 28 people in 1990 and 59 in 2010.
