Description

The History Nebraska marker "Chalk Mine," on NE 11 about 2 miles south of Scotia at Happy Jack Peak, tells how settlers arriving in 1872 found trapper and scout Jack Swearengen living in a dugout in the chalk bluffs and using the peak as a lookout; how Ed Wright began mining the chalk in 1877 and built a chalk-block store in Scotia in 1887; how an Omaha paint company reopened the mine in the 1930s for paint, whitewash, cement, polish and chicken feed; and how Game and Parks bought the site in 1967.
