About Kent
Kent is the site of a former village on the North Loup River in southeastern Loup County, about 3 miles east of Taylor along NE 91. The Kent Cemetery keeps the name, and the Kent Diversion Dam WMA, 5½ miles east of Taylor, is named for the old diversion dam on the river. Nothing of the town is known to remain.
History
Kent had the valley’s first post office, from 1877, and its first trading post, in 1880. When Loup County was organized in 1883, Kent was named the temporary county seat; in the vote for a permanent seat it backed Almeria, which lost to Taylor by two votes. The Taylor Clarion was started at Kent in 1883 before moving to Taylor. In 1890 Kent was a village of about 25 people on the Loup River, 6 miles from Taylor by road.
