About Camp Sheridan

Camp Sheridan was a U.S. Army post on the west fork of Beaver Creek in the Pine Ridge country of northwestern Sheridan County, about 12 miles north-northwest of Hay Springs, beside the Spotted Tail Agency of the Brulé Lakota. The site and the agency site, listed together on the National Register in 1974, are on private land with no public access, and their exact location is restricted. The History Nebraska marker is in Hay Springs on South Post Street just south of US 20. The Beaver Valley around the site also has the Sheridan Gates buttes and the Beaver Wall.

History

The Spotted Tail Agency was moved to Beaver Creek in 1874 to issue treaty goods to Spotted Tail's Brulés, and Camp Sheridan was set up beside it in March 1874. In 1875 Capt. Anson Mills built permanent quarters, more than 30 frame and brick buildings, and the garrison reached seven companies at its peak. In September 1877 Crazy Horse came to the agency and surrendered; he was taken to Camp Robinson, about 40 miles west, and killed there, and his parents brought his body back to Camp Sheridan. The Brulés were moved to present South Dakota on October 29, 1877, and the camp was abandoned on May 1, 1881.
