About Ickes
Ickes was an inland post office in Davison precinct of Cheyenne County, probably in the northern part of the county. Nothing remains of it, and its exact site is not known.
History
The 1890 Nebraska State Gazetteer lists Ickes as a recently established post office. The 1925 Nebraska Place-Names says it was named for Adam Ickes, an early county treasurer. In 1898 a telephone line connected Sidney with the Water Holes Ranch, Ickes and Redington, one of the first in the county. Like other inland offices it closed after rural mail delivery began.
