About Day
Day was a pioneer settlement and inland post office near the northeastern corner of Deuel County, in Big Springs precinct, about 9 miles north of Big Springs on Day Road. The map marks the Waterman Sod House, which stood at the southern edge of the settlement.
History
The 1925 Nebraska Place-Names calls Day a pioneer inland post office, probably named for a local person; the 1890 gazetteer listed it as "recently established," and the post office operated from 1890 to 1903. Around 1900 Day had four houses (two of sod, one frame and one stone), a livery, a combined post office and store, a blacksmith shop, a Methodist church and a school, and a cream station that sent cream to Julesburg for shipment to Denver.
Wallace W. and Libby King Waterman built their sod house at the south edge of the settlement about 1886. The family lived in it until 1989, and in 1993 they gave it to the Deuel County Historical Society; it is the only building of Day still standing and was listed on the National Register in 1995. The Prospect Valley (Day) Cemetery also remains.
