About Haig
Haig is an unincorporated place in central Scotts Bluff County, on the Union Pacific's south-side branch about 5 miles south-southeast of Mitchell and 5 miles west of Scottsbluff, near Scotts Bluff National Monument.
History
Haig grew up at a Union Pacific siding on the branch that was extended west from Gering to Lyman in the 1910s and 1920s. Its post office, sometimes called Haigville, opened in 1914 and closed in 1963. Place-name scholars say it was named for Harry Haig, a local cowboy. Haig School stood about a mile southwest of the siding.
