About Yankton
Yankton, spelled Yancton in early accounts, was a village on the Missouri River in eastern Richardson County, about 2 miles north-northeast of Rulo. Nothing remains, and the map point is approximate.
History
The Yankton Town Company, whose members included Stephen F., Heath and Houston Nuckolls, Henry Goulet and Robert F. Armstrong, surveyed the plat on September 8, 1857, and coal veins were found there. The town did not last: houses from Yankton were taken down and rebuilt in Falls City as its first hotel, owned by Jesse Crook. The source of the name is not recorded.
