About Winnebago
Winnebago was a small town in eastern Richardson County, about 3 miles south of Arago and a mile or two back from the Missouri River, roughly 5 to 6 miles north of Rulo. Nothing is documented on the site today, and the map point is approximate.
History
Winnebago was laid out on land of Joseph Piquoit, of mixed Native and French descent, in the Half-Breed Tract, and was settled mostly by French, Native and mixed-race families. The county commissioners incorporated it on August 16, 1858, with five trustees. At its height it had two general stores, one kept by H. J. Vandall, a saloon, a blacksmith, a boarding house and 18 to 20 houses. A Winnebago village once stood on Winnebago Creek nearby, the likely source of the name. When the town ended is not recorded.
