About Glenrock

Glenrock (Glen Rock) is a former town in Nemaha County, about 4.5 miles north-northwest of Auburn and 4 miles southeast of Brock, named for the rock quarries nearby. The Glenrock Cemetery is about 1.5 miles to the north-northeast.

History

Allen L. Coate surveyed a town site called Glen Rock in 1857, and a post office opened in Salathial Good's home in 1859. When the Missouri Pacific built through in 1882, a new station town of Glen Rock was laid off with side tracks, and the first site became "Old Glen Rock." The town had stores, elevators, a church, a hotel, a school, a bank and a doctor, and in the 1890s it shipped about 229 carloads of ice and 197 of stone a year. Gaps in the Little Nemaha bridges cut off its trade, the spelling became Glenrock in 1894, and the post office closed in 1929.
