About Bordeaux
Bordeaux is the site of a former railroad station and post office on Bordeaux Creek in eastern Dawes County, about 10 miles east-southeast of Chadron and 9 miles northwest of Hay Springs. It is not the Bordeaux Trading Post, which is about 3 miles east of Chadron at the Museum of the Fur Trade.
History
The station on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley (later Chicago & North Western) took its name from Bordeaux Creek, itself named for James Bordeaux, who founded a trading post for the American Fur Company near Chadron in 1837. The Bordeaux post office ran from 1884 to 1896; the 1890 gazetteer placed the station 11 miles east of Chadron and listed no businesses. Union veterans held August reunions in a grove on Little Bordeaux Creek. Nothing of the station is known to remain.
