Thornburgh, Nebraska

Thornburgh, also written Thornburg, was a settlement on Red Willow Creek in northern Hayes County. The precinct still carries the name.

History

A settlement had grown up in the Thornburg vicinity by 1878 and 1879, further down the creek from Carrico; the first filers were Daniel Fuller, Michael Brennen and Joab Copeland. Sources put the post office at 1878, 1880 or July 1881. It moved to Frontier County in September 1888, came back to Hayes County in September 1924 and closed that December.

Because the office sat in Frontier County for thirty-six years, some records file it under that county rather than this one. Thornburg precinct and several of its cemeteries remain.
