Cedar Bluffs was established in 1886 when the Chicago & North Western Railroad extended to the site, named for a prominent river bluff covered with cedar trees along a documented stretch of the Mormon, Oregon, and California Trails.

A compact village of 615 residents (2020 Census) covering just 0.39 square miles, Cedar Bluffs sits at a historically significant point along three of the great overland emigrant trails.
