About Cedar Bluffs
Cedar Bluffs is a village in Saunders County, in eastern Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 615 residents. The count was 615 in 2000 and 610 in 2010, so the village has held steady for a long time. It covers about four tenths of a square mile. Nebraska Highway 109 runs nearby. Most working residents drive somewhere else: Fremont, Schuyler, Wahoo and Omaha all draw commuters from town.
History
The area was a waypoint on the Mormon, Oregon and California trails. The town itself dates to 1886, when the Chicago and North Western Railroad built its Lincoln line through. The site came out of Joseph Johnson's homestead. Lots were auctioned from a wagon in heavy rain, and building went up fast. A hardware store opened within a day, then a drug store and places to eat. The name comes from an abrupt bluff on the Platte River nearby, where cedar trees grew.
The railroad years
For decades the depot was how people got anywhere, and how everything else moved. Grain, livestock, coal and lumber all went through it. Passenger service fell off after the Second World War. The last train came through in 1981. The tracks were pulled up by 1983.
