Madison is the county seat of Madison County in northeast Nebraska, located at the intersection of NE-32 and NE-121. Named for President James Madison, the town was established in 1868 when Madison County was organized. History

Madison County was organized in 1867 from land previously part of Platte County. The county was named for President James Madison, and the county seat town took the same name. By the 1880s, Madison had grown into a functioning county town with a courthouse, schools, churches, and businesses serving the surrounding farming community.

The railroad era brought expanded commerce and connectivity. Like many Nebraska county seats, Madison weathered the farm crises of the 1980s and continued to serve as an essential civic anchor for the region.
