Benkelman is the county seat of Dundy County, located in the far southwestern corner of Nebraska near the borders of Colorado and Kansas. The community was founded around 1880 as "Collinsville," then renamed in 1882 by the railroad in honor of J.G. Benkelman, a local stock raiser. When Dundy County organized in 1884, the Lincoln Land Company donated land for a courthouse square to help secure Benkelman's selection as county seat, and the current courthouse was built in 1888-89. Today Benkelman is home to about 820 residents and sits along U.S. Route 34 and the BNSF Railway line. The town has produced several notable figures, including Hollywood actor Ward Bond, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, and U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Edward W. Snedeker. Visitors can explore the Dundy County Museum, which still has a working soda fountain, and the town hosts the Dundy County Fair each July with a community-owned carnival.
Benkelman serves as the administrative and commercial center of Dundy County, anchored by its historic courthouse square and small local businesses like the long-running Dub Drive-In and Circle B Motor Lodge. Though its population has gradually declined from a peak near 1,000 in 2000, Benkelman remains the hub for the county's ranching and farming community, drawing visitors for its annual county fair and local museum.
