Max is a small unincorporated community in eastern Dundy County, about 9 miles southwest of Benkelman. It traces its founding to April 3, 1880, when a French-Canadian trapper and early settler -- recorded in local histories as Max Monivisin or Max Monvoison -- filed what genealogical records describe as the first Dundy County land claim made by someone other than a stockman. The community was named for his given name. Max's post office holds a distinctive claim among Dundy County communities: according to local histories, it is the only post office in the county that has survived without ever changing its name. Max also figures into a stranger piece of county lore -- the community was cited in an 1884 Nebraska State Journal story, later confirmed as a hoax, describing cowboys who supposedly found a crashed flying object nearby, one of the earliest known American "UFO crash" tales. With a 2020 population of about 50, Max remains a small but active community, still hosting fish fry suppers throughout the year.
Max is one of Dundy County's smallest communities, but it carries an outsized piece of local history through both its unusual post-office record and its connection to the 1884 "Dundy County UFO hoax." Today it remains a modest rural gathering point in eastern Dundy County, still home to regular community suppers.
