About Orella
Orella is a ghost town on the BNSF (Burlington) line in northeastern Sioux County, about 15 miles north-northwest of Crawford. Its last buildings stand on private land and are closed to visitors.
History
In 1906 the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy moved its station from Adelia (Joder) up the grade to Orella, named for a local woman. The town grew to several streets with stores, a stable and a church, and was a railhead for cattle; its post office ran from 1910 to 1957. It declined in the Depression and again with cutbacks at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot in the 1950s. Passenger service ended in 1957, and the last residents, John and Mable Carnahan, left in 1968. Their house, the section foreman's house and the depot remain on private property.
