About Inez
Inez is a former post office community in the Sandhills lakes and flowing-well country of southwestern Holt County, about 17 miles south of Atkinson and 6 miles northwest of Amelia. The area is ranch land today.
History
In 1884 Inez was only a little store and post office in a settler's home. The post office was named in August 1886 for a member of the Adams family. It was kept first in the Roark home and later in John Moss's general store; John Hubbell bought the store in 1906 and ran the post office until 1917. It closed in 1930.
The neighborhood was also called Fountain Valley. Both Catholic Mass and Methodist services were held in the Inez schoolhouse, and the school board started a high school in 1915. The community telephone line ran on barbed-wire fences, with insulators cut from old rubber boots. In 1925 three of the five Inez families had no car, so the Amelia priest said Mass in a storeroom of H.E. McDonald's store.
