About Hollinger
Hollinger is a former town on Beaver Creek in southeastern Furnas County, about 6½ miles east-northeast of Beaver City and near NE 89, on the old Burlington branch between Beaver City and Stamford.
History
Hollinger grew up as a station on the Burlington's branch up the Beaver, built in 1887; according to Fitzpatrick's Nebraska Place-Names, the railroad chose the name from a list of suggestions. A post office opened on January 4, 1905, and Hollinger appears on the 1912 Rand McNally map. The post office closed in the mid-1940s (1944 or 1945, sources differ).
The name lives on as Hollinger Precinct, where NE 46 begins at NE 89, and the Southern Valley school district still lists Hollinger among the communities it serves. The rail line has had no trains since about 2015.
