Virginia Cemetery sits on a rolling hillside in Goose Creek Precinct, in the far south of Cherry County, some way north-east of Mullen and a long drive south-east of Valentine. It stands on the eastern part of what was the Stephen James valley; the ranch has remained in the family and was later run by Eugene James, a grandson of Stephen. It is listed under Brownlee, the nearest village in Cherry County, about twenty-one miles to the north-east. Mullen is closer — about eight miles to the south-west — but lies in Hooker County.
Because of that, the same burial ground is sometimes indexed under the ranch family's name as James Cemetery. It is one cemetery, not two. Despite the family connection this is a community burial ground, with fifteen or more surnames recorded — Bow, Boyer, Lee, Smith, Bullington, Downing, Little, Miller, Mink, Murray and Weber among them.
Around 28 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there.
This is remote country and the last stretch is ranch road.
