The Thorpe Opera House at 461 D Street in David City was built in 1889 for William Thorpe and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. The three-story brick building holds an auditorium with a balcony, and over the years it served as a dance hall, youth center and movie house before it was refurbished in 1981.
It hosts monthly productions including theater, choir and solo and group acts, and tours are available by appointment for a fee. Groups can rent it for meetings, dinners, receptions and performances through the city. The Thorpe Opera House Foundation also owns the Boston Studio Project, a collection of more than 68,000 photo negatives stored at Hruska Memorial Public Library.
