Description

Taylor Cemetery lies north of Homer in the middle of Dakota County. Five acres were deeded to the Salem Evangelical Lutheran church by William Taylor, and the first burial was a child of William Gobble in the winter of 1856.

It was very nearly somewhere else. A small plot on the crest of the hill above it, along the bluff road, was meant to be the Taylor Cemetery — but the climb was judged too steep for mourners to manage, so the main ground was laid out lower down near the road. Ten to fifteen graves remain up on the crest, and the way up is steep from any direction.

Around 556 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there.

For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the Dakota County Clerk in Dakota City. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
