Stockville Village Office

Stockville Village Office is the municipal office for Stockville, Nebraska. Stockville is the county seat of Frontier County and, with a population of 25 across 0.26 square miles, one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in the state. The village publishes no separately staffed office, and county business in Stockville runs through the Frontier County Courthouse, whose county clerk is the practical point of contact. That frame courthouse, built in 1889, is still in use and is noted as the last county courthouse in the nation to get indoor plumbing. Stockville fought off three separate attempts to move the county seat to Curtis, in 1920, 1930 and 1950; in one early dispute townsmen armed themselves to stop county files being seized by force. The village was founded in 1872 and laid out by W. L. McClary, and the name refers to the livestock of the many ranchers in the surrounding country. Population peaked at around 269 in 1900. Frank B. Morrison, the 31st Governor of Nebraska, was from Stockville; local children attend Maywood Public Schools.
