Scott's Grocery is the food shop at Hayes Center, the seat of Hayes County - a county of fewer than a thousand people in the tableland of southwest Nebraska. There is no larger town anywhere near, so the store carries the produce, meat, dairy, frozen and pantry range a whole county needs, and its survival is the difference between Hayes Center being a town and being a crossroads.
