Description

Perrett-Stensbie Cemetery lies in the far south-west of Cherry County, in the north-west quarter of Section 7, Township 25, Range 39, on what was the Leo Egan Ranch. It is recorded locally as about fourteen miles north of Ashby. There is no village near it. It is listed under Irwin, which is the nearest village in Cherry County and still about forty-nine miles to the north; Ashby, in Grant County, is far closer.

It goes by three names. Cherry County's records call it Perrett-Stensbie; Grant County's library records call it Stansbie-Perrett, and also Old Mason Cemetery. All three are needed for record searches. It is not connected to Mason Cemetery in Sioux County, which is a different place entirely.

Both Cherry and Grant County genealogical records document this cemetery — it stands out in empty country near the county line, and Ashby, over in Grant County, is simply the nearest named place. The coordinates below will find it whichever county line falls where.

It is a community burial ground despite the double family name — Baugh, Buck, Combs, Johnson, Perrett, Stansbie and Wilson are among the families recorded, with burials from 1891.

Around 19 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there.

For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the Cherry County Clerk in Valentine. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
