Description

Mormon Pioneer Cemetery, also recorded as Winter Quarters Pioneer Cemetery, stands at 33rd and State in historic Florence, beside the Winter Quarters Temple.

Winter Quarters was settled in 1846 by Brigham Young and the Mormon migration west. About four thousand people wintered there, and about six hundred of them died on the Nebraska side of the river. This is where they were buried.

Around 540 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there.

For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the cemetery office, or the Douglas County Clerk in Omaha. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
