Description

Holsclaw Cemetery lies on the north-west edge of Valentine. It was begun in 1891, when the Reverend Sam Holsclaw — a pioneer preacher and homesteader — laid out a cemetery in the south portion of the school section. The first person buried in it was his own son.

It served the families around it rather than one family alone: Holsclaw, Thacher, Emery and Nolan are among the names recorded.

Around 8 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there. For a cemetery in use since 1891 the real number is certainly higher.

No mapped coordinates are published for this cemetery, so the directions above are the best guide.

For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the City of Valentine, or the Cherry County Clerk in Valentine. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
