Description

Cottonwood Cemetery lies about half a mile south and half a mile west of Burwell in Garfield County, and is by a wide margin the largest burial ground in the county. It is also recorded simply as Burwell Cemetery. The name comes from a cottonwood that grew from a stick planted by the homesteader Thomas McKenzie.

Find a Grave holds 3,799 memorials for it, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there. For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the City of Burwell, or the Garfield County Clerk in Burwell. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
