Butte Village Office

Butte Village Office is the municipal office for Butte, Nebraska, at 520 Thayer Street. Butte is the county seat of Boyd County, population 286, in far north-central Nebraska between the Niobrara River and the South Dakota line. The village is named for the small hills, or buttes, near the original town site, and occupies about 0.42 square miles. In the early 1990s land two miles west of Butte was bought for a proposed low-level radioactive waste facility; after prolonged litigation the project was abandoned and Nebraska left the compact in 2004. Notable people connected to the village include Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, who graduated from Butte High School in 1982, and the professional wrestler George Wagner, known as Gorgeous George, who was born in Butte in 1915.
