Hire is a small populated place in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the Lackey Election Precinct, southeast of Whitman in the ranch country of the central Nebraska Sandhills. It takes its name from John C. Hire, at whose home the post office was established.

The Hire post office opened April 29, 1911, and served this remote area for 34 years before closing in 1945.

History

The Hire post office was established April 29, 1911, named in honor of John C. Hire, at whose home the office was located -- a common arrangement for rural Sandhills post offices, which were often run out of a settler's own house. The office remained in operation until 1945.
