Bayonne, Nebraska

Bayonne is a small populated place in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the ranch country of the Merriman Election Precinct, a few miles southwest of Irwin. Like several place names in this remote corner of the Nebraska Sandhills, Bayonne survives today only as a map reference to a long-closed post office.

The Bayonne post office was established on June 25, 1914, and served the area for two decades before closing in 1935. Its first postmaster, Martin Hansen, named the office for Bayonne, New Jersey.

History

The Bayonne post office opened June 25, 1914, with Martin Hansen serving as first postmaster. Hansen chose to name the office after Bayonne, New Jersey, a naming choice with no direct local connection -- not uncommon among rural Sandhills post offices, which were often named by whoever happened to be appointed postmaster. The post office closed in 1935, and Bayonne today exists only as a named location on USGS maps.
