About Arizona
Arizona is an unincorporated community near the Missouri River in eastern Burt County, about 6 miles east-northeast of Tekamah. A few homes and the Arizona Community Cemetery remain, and Pelican Point State Recreation Area is about 2 miles northeast.
History
J. M. Simpson settled here in August 1855. The place was named for Arizona Territory and served as a Missouri River landing; the post office opened on July 15, 1867, and closed on December 12, 1899. By 1880–81 Arizona had a store, blacksmith shop, church and schoolhouse, and Arizona precinct counted 615 people. The railroad went to Tekamah in 1876 and never reached Arizona.
The cemetery has many old, hard-to-read stones; a 1976 transcription is kept by the Burt County Museum. The John Henry Stork Log House, on the National Register, is about 4 miles south-southwest.
