About Inland
Inland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in north-western Clay County, Nebraska. It stands about 14 miles north-west of Clay Center, the county seat, and about 10 miles west of Hastings, on local roads north of U.S. Route 6. The place covers roughly 0.16 square miles at an elevation of about 1,857 feet. The 2020 census counted 58 residents, down from 62 in 2010. Inland is unincorporated but still has a working post office, ZIP code 68954.
History
The present town dates to about 1878. A post office opened in 1879.
The name
A 1925 survey of Nebraska place names reports that the name was carried over from an older town in Adams County, that the railroad company assigned it under its alphabetical system of station names, and that it was understood to describe the location, inland rather than on a coast. Other reference works record only that the name is descriptive.
