Description

This marker, placed by the DAR in 1940, stands at a south-side pullout on US 30 about 0.1 mile west of Road 430, about 3 miles west-northwest of Lexington. On August 7, 1867, Southern Cheyenne under Turkey Leg derailed a westbound Union Pacific freight and a handcar near here; the engineer, the fireman and a handcar man were killed. It is a separate event from the Plum Creek Massacre of August 1864, which took place south of the river, in what is now Phelps County.
