History Nebraska marker No. 14, in a pull-out on S. Jackson Rd. near US 30 at Maxwell, tells the story of Fort McPherson, built as Post Cottonwood in 1863 on the Oregon Trail south of the Platte, renamed in 1866 and abandoned in 1880; the national cemetery that grew from its post cemetery is about 4 miles south.
