Two monuments just north of the Montrose church mark the Battle of Warbonnet Creek of July 17, 1876, when seven companies of the 5th Cavalry under Col. Wesley Merritt turned back Cheyenne leaving the Red Cloud Agency and scout William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody killed Yellow Hair (Yellow Hand). The battlefield monument on the hill was rebuilt in 1997 by the Friends of the Warbonnet Battlefield; the Yellow Hand monument stands across Warbonnet Creek nearer the road. Park off Road 958 and walk. From Harrison, about 16 miles north on Monroe Canyon and Edgemont roads, then 8 miles east on Montrose Road.
