This Nebraska historical marker on US 385 about 4 miles south of Gurley, erected in 1967, recalls the Marathon Oil Company's Mary Egging No. 1 well, about 5 miles southeast of Gurley. Completed on August 9, 1949, it produced 225 barrels a day from 4,429 feet, the first successful oil well in western Nebraska.
