Pony Express Park, on Link 25A just north of I-80 exit 85 at Chappell, has two History Nebraska markers. "Historic Lodgepole Creek Valley" tells of the Pony Express, which ran up the creek in 1860–61 with its Nine Mile station just southeast of today's Chappell, the 1861 telegraph and the Union Pacific of 1867. The second marker recalls June 7, 1944, when a B-24J bomber caught fire in a thunderstorm, circled Chappell and exploded about 2 miles southeast of town, killing all ten crew of the 866th Bomb Squadron.
