About Kiowa
Kiowa was a station on the overland trail along the Little Blue River in western Thayer County, about 7 miles north-northwest of Deshler and 6 miles southeast of Davenport. The site is on private farmland, and the map point is approximate.
History
Kiowa Ranch, kept by James Douglas, served the Pony Express and the Overland Stage on the road up the Little Blue toward Fort Kearny, about 12 miles northwest of present Hebron. After the raids of August 1864 struck ranches and stations along the trail, a militia post was kept at the station, and in 1870 a company of regular troops was stationed at Kiowa.
A post office named Kiowa, for the Kiowa people, operated from 1873 to 1903, and Kiowa was also the name of a county precinct. By 1917 the office had been discontinued; the gazetteer placed it 9 miles southeast of Davenport.
