Nebraska historical marker No. 48, on NE 103 about 2 miles northwest of DeWitt, tells the story of Swan City, the first town and county seat of Saline County. The town grew to about 200 people with a hotel and mills, lost the county seat to Pleasant Hill in 1871 and was bypassed by the railroad, and its last mill burned in 1891.
