About Leavitt
Leavitt was the factory town of the Standard Beet Sugar Company, about a mile west of Ames and 7 miles east of North Bend in the Platte valley of Dodge County. A grove of trees a third of a mile north of County Road 14 Boulevard marks the site, and an overgrown scale house survives; the land is private.
History
From about 1898 the University of Nebraska ran sugar-beet experiments on the Standard Cattle Company farm at Ames, with a laboratory run by C. L. Sovereign. The Standard Beet Sugar Company opened its factory here in 1899. Fitzpatrick ties the town's name to the sugar works; another account says it was named for the company's president, a Mr. Leavitt.
The factory stopped operating in 1906 and the company was wound up between 1907 and 1910. In 1910 the plant was taken down and moved to Scottsbluff, in the irrigated North Platte valley, and Leavitt emptied.
